Gregg R. Essex

Lighting Designer

GREGG R. ESSEX has been designing in dance for the past decade.

In Chicago, he is entering his 8th season as the resident Lighting Designer for Melissa Thodos and Dancers. He has designed for Dance Chicago since itıs beginning in 1995, starting with The Jump Giant production. Gregg has worked with many independent choreographers, including Sabine Fabie and Mark Shultz, Brian Jeffery and Julia Rhoades, Harrison McEldowney, Elain McLaurin, and scores of others. Gregg has also worked with Joel Hall, Randy Duncan, Vanessa Truvillion, Billy Siegenfeld, Hubbard Street, The Gus Giordano Dance Studio, Ballet Chicago, and The Chicago Festival Ballet based in Naperville. Last year Gregg was the Lighting Designer for Continental Shifts at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Gregg's dance lighting has a free and statementistic quality relying on the descriptions of emotions and feelings rather than on a scripted phrase. "Hey I love the people involved - their work is inspiring, and they stretch me creatively so I strive in my design work to return what they have given me, personally and artistically."
